MA Senator Proposes Medical Marijuana Sales Tax

MA Medical Marijuana

A Massachusetts senator hopes to institute a 6.25% sales tax on all medical marijuana purchases.

Democratic senator, Brian Joyce, also hopes to apply a fixed 4% surcharge on all dispensaries’ revenue. The money generated from Joyce’s proposals would go towards a newly formed state fund for the treatment of citizens with substance abuse problems.

There is of course opposition of this tax on medical marijuana. One member of the Massachusetts Patient Advocacy Alliance, Matthew Allen, feels that imposing a tax on medicine that so many ill patients truly need is “inappropriate”.

These are just a couple of the hundreds of amendments that have been filed by senators in preparation of a senate debate in regards to a $36 billion state budget.
