The first five days of recreational marijuana sales in Massachusetts tallied $2.2 million. As the second week of sales took off, $2.6 million more was sold. The state has sold $4.8 million of product since November 20.
The tax structure imposes a 6.25% sales tax, 10.75% excise tax and an optional 3% local tax, according to MassLive. A total of 65,196 units of marijuana were purchased in the 2nd week of sales. Units refer to a single product.
Representative Mark Cusack said, “There’s a huge public demand for this.”
Cusack commented that the money spent at legal retailers didn’t go into the black market dealers’ pockets.
