Mass. Replicating New Mexico Medical Marijuana Program

medical marijuana dispensary boston massachusettsMassachusetts is believed to be replicating New Mexico’s medical marijuana program, which is the strictest in the country.

New Mexico lawmakers approved their medical marijuana program–also know as, New Mexico Medical Cannabis Program–in 2007. Sine then, there are more than 11,000 qualified patients. Each of which can possess up to 6 ounces of marijuana.

There are more qualifying medical conditions in New Mexico than is expected in Massachusetts, but it is expected that Massachusetts’ medical marijuana law will be more lenient by allowing doctors to use their own discretion in deciding who could benefit from medical marijuana. In other words, the doctors will be responsible for telling their patients that they recommend they try medical marijuana, just like a doctor might tell someone with insomnia to try Ambien.

Officials in Boston at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health are hard at work creating the medical marijuana laws that are supposed to be completed by May 1, 2013. Only time will tell what is in store for the medical marijuana industry in Massachusetts.
