NASCAR driver Derek White, along with dozens of others, were involved in an international tobacco smuggling ring that has been labeled as the largest tobacco smuggling bust in North American history. White is accused of playing a major roll by transporting over 2,000 tons of tobacco from North Carolina to Canada, in which about $530 million in Canadian taxes were eluded.

Along with tobacco, the crew smuggled millions worth of marijuana, cocaine, and other drugs, CBS News reported. An investigation into the smuggling ring began in 2014 and the DEA and Homeland Security have been actively working with Canadian officials since.

Also seized during the bust:

  • 35 pounds of marijuana
  • $3 million U.S. currency
  • $1.5 million Canadian currency
  • 46 pounds methamphetamine
  • 1,800 pounds of cocaine

Almost 70 searches using 700 officers between the two countries were conducted. Some of the counts against White include conspiracy to commit fraud against the government and profiteering as a criminal organization. Three counts for fraud against the government are also listed.
